Irmi & Sylvia - A queer wedding in Austria's Wachau
As of 2019, gay, straight, and lesbian couples can get married in Austria. Finally. When we celebrated Irmi & Sylvia in the summer of 2018, we knew that most likely they would have to renew their vows in 2019, when the relationship status of domestic partnership for queer couples was going to be elevated to marriage. But why wait? As feminists, it was crucial to them to support female or queer vendors for all things they could not supply themselves. Invitations and decorations were all DIY reflecting on their passion for travel (also, Irmi is a flight attendant). A number of friends were their chosen bridesmen, wearing suspenders and bow-ties, others contributed either a reading or singing even. Everyone was there from friends flying in from around the world to their loving (and lovely) grandmothers to get together in the vineyards in one of Austria’s most stunning areas, the Wachau along the Danube.
