Michaela & Florian - an Engagement Shoot at Grand Ferdinand Hotel in Vienna
Blessed with Beauty
I took the liberty to translate this quote from Austria’s anthem quite freely: „Begnadet für das Schöne.“ It’s an interesting sentence since it determines the following rhyme with “sons” (Söhne), which has caused a bit of a stir amongst the forward thinking today. The problem being that the text suggests that Austria is home to great sons and hereby neglecting its great daughters. It takes more than a rhyme to justify such blatant disrespect and a few years ago, the text was altered to include women as well. Hallelujah. But I digress…
Let’s talk about how we are blessed with beauty. And how very Austrian this amazing Engagement shoot is that we realized with Michaela and Florian who took an active part in thinking through concept and styling with us. First off, we were incredibly lucky that we were allowed to rummage around our friend’s private collection of vintage clothes. And when I say vintage, I mean 19th Century. That kind of vintage. Florian is way taller than your average 19th Century gent yet looked so fab in the dress coat, let alone the bow-tie.
But needless to say, things got really interesting once Michaela put on the garter. And with the top hat, we had arrived at a Smashing Pumpkins kind of look we didn’t even anticipate just until we started playing around. And let's be honest: Alternative rock is a lot cooler than a national anthem. Thanks to Grand Ferdinand for allowing us to shoot in one of their fabulous suites
This was shot mostly on film with our Mamiya 645. Thanks to Carmencita Film Lab for their wonderful service.
